Publishing mp3-files ripped of commercial cd's is a copyright violation so this page is strictly for educational purposes. I'm working on putting my best songs in mp3-format so I can use my computer as an expensive stereo. The main purpose of this page is to show how to make mp3-files on a Power Macintosh, since the cd on my pc can't rip cd-audio without qualityloss. There is now a freeware program available called MPekEncoder which can encode mp3 files so now you don't need any commercial program, but Soundedit is still my favourit since I can batchconvert files. Anyway if you don't have soundedit this might be what you've been waiting for. The program seems to work fine even though there is room for improvement. All stuff available for download from my page is as far as I know "free stuff". I found a page on the net by which I learned to encode mp3's on the mac, a nice page written by ICube. And you please don't forget to visit my main page.
You need a Power Mac to run CDtoAIFF and Soundedit 16 or MPek Encoder. When this was written the plugin for soundedit 16, to make MPEG layer 3 audio was only available on the Power Mac version. And you should have a really fast machine anyway since making mp3's is very processor intence. You'll want to use CDtoAIFF since Soundedit 16 rips one track at the time. And you have to add a channel to get stereo. CDtoAIFF reads raw data frow your cd and writes aiff-files to your harddrive, one benefit besides high quality is speed, for example an 8-speed cd rips eight times as fast as if you would use the dsp. Start CDToAIFF, choose Multi Recording from the file menu. Select your tracks, where to put it on your harddrive and press record. One minute takes approximately 10 mb space. The file created will be AIFF, 44,100 kHz, 16 bit, stereo. MPek Encoding comes further downEncoding with Soundedit 16 1. Open Soundedit 16. Select "Shockwave for Audio Settings..." under the "Xtras"-menu. The bit rate should be 128 KBits/second (mostly used). I've put Accuracy on High since that gives better output quality. 2. Go to "File" and select "Export". Change export type to "SWA File" and save the file with desired name. On my 7600/132 (PowerPC 604) encoding of a 4:38 minute long song took about 23 minutes with high accuracy. That is about 1:5, that is it takes five minutes to encode one minute of mp3 audio. 3. After endless waiting your file is done. Drag it onto the MPEG-3 Autotyper. This will change the type to "Mp3" and the creator to "AudA" (AudioActive). You can also use resedit and a great utily called snitch 4. Start AudioActive and open the file to see that it works. I haven't had a file that didn't yet anyway. 5. If you have version 2.0.4 of soundedit 16 you can batchconvert aiff files to mp3 with a SWA Atomator Droplet that comes with the Soundedit Streaming Audio Toolkit. Just select the files you wish to convert on the script and go to bed. The next morning you'll have your files converted and ready if nothing has gone wrong (knock on wood). 1. Start the program MPekEncoder and you'll immediately get a "select-file-window". Choose the aiff-file you want to convert and select open. 2. The program will start converting the file to mp3 format in stereo, 44,1 kHz and a bitrate of 128kbps right away. 3. On my 7600/132 (PowerPC 604) the encoding of a 4:38 minutes long song took about 14 minutes. That is a bit slower than 1:3, that is it takes three minutes to make one minute of mp3 audio. 4. I haven't checked to see if there is any difference between the files created with Soundedit 16 and MPekEncoder, if you have any experience of this or any comments please contact me. *. I use snitch to change type and creator since I love this utility, its slower than batch converting but it adds other features to your "get info" command. **. The players on the pc are much much better I'm afraid and don't crash as often, hopefully this will be arranged soon. Have you visited my main page yet Macintosh Program Soundedit 16 2.0 information MPecker encoder 1.0a3 is very fast and now support batchconverting of files. A great program please try it.
